What are mealworms?
Mealworms are a popular feeder insect for reptiles, bluebirds, chickens, fish, and many other animals. They are high in protein and fat, easy to maintain, and convenient to keep on hand as part of a varied feeding routine.

How often should mealworms be offered?
Mealworms can be used as a regular part of your pet’s diet, preferably as part of a rotation with at least two other types of staple feeder insects.

Mealworms should always be lightly dusted with calcium powder before feeding when appropriate for the animal being fed.
How to care for mealworms:
Mealworms should be kept chilled in a wine cooler or refrigerator. Keeping them cool allows you to adjust the temperature higher than a standard refrigerator while still slowing their development.
A refrigerator door shelf between 42°F and 50°F is a suitable range. At these temperatures, the mealworms will become dormant and can remain in good condition for up to two weeks.
After two weeks, remove the mealworms from refrigeration and add a small amount of Easy Water to the top of the bedding. Allow the mealworms to remain at room temperature for about 24 hours. This gives them time to wake up, become more active, and consume food and water. The mealworm bedding also serves as their food source.
After 24 hours, remove any remaining Easy Water and return the mealworms to refrigeration. Repeat this process approximately every two weeks.
